Trilogy is readily available at many online retailers, including our favourites like Pet Circle and Petbarn.

This product line comes in 85g cans and a pack of 12 cans runs around $63 at the time of publishing. That comes in at approximately $2.63/can. It’s not quite what we consider budget (less than $2), falling more into mid range pricing.

Look out for multi-buy offers or purchase in larger quantities and you can likely find it for less than $2.30/can.

History

Trilogy cat food is a specialty cat food brand under the parent brand – Real Pet Food Co. You might recall the name as they are the makers of Fussy Cat (which we have covered in a previous review) and other popular brands such as Ivory Coat.

They are one of their newer brands (launching in 2021) compared to Fussy Cat which has been around for over two decades. Their flagship products are their dry food lines which feature a freeze dried proteins.

Looking closer at how Trilogy markets themselves, you won’t necessarily find out anything substantial. They claim to produce ultra premium cat food that are specifically formulated for our cats. Unfortunately, they don’t offer much information around their sourcing or the particulars about how their formulations stand out.

That’s not to say they are bad products, but those looking for more transparency won’t find as many details.

On the plus side, all of Trilogy’s offerings are grain free and meet AAFCO standards ensuring they meet a stringent quality standard for adults and kittens.

Recalls

To date, Trilogy cat food has not been recalled. In Australia, pet food recalls are only mandatory for brands that have decided to work within the Australian Standard for Manufacturing and Marketing of Pet Food (Standard AS5812:2017). All members of the Pet Food Industry Association of Australia comply with these standards. At the time of publishing, Real Pet Food Co is a manufacturing member of the Association and would fall under its responsibility.

Product line commentary

Today, we’re taking a look at Trilogy Adult Farm Raised Chicken in Rich Bone Broth. It’s a bit of a mouthful but we promise it’s worth a look. This complete and balanced wet cat food is formulated for adult cats and can be fed as part of their daily diet. For those chicken lovers, they’ll be pleased to know this is also a single protein product.

First impressions: Good ingredients with room for clarity

Trilogy chicken in bone broth wet cat food makes a strong first impression, with its use of farm-raised chicken—a step up from conventional industrial poultry. Since this term is not standardized or regulated, it would be helpful to clarify what “farm-raised” means. It could mean that the chickens are raised with occasional access to the outdoors, or they could be closer to free range standards, where chickens spend at least 8 hours with outdoor access. Since this suggests better quality and animal welfare practices, more transparency here could benefit both the product and brand.

Food textures can be a fickle thing, with some cats having strong preferences for one texture over another. From our (human) perspective, one of the nicest benefits of this product is the visible shredded chicken. It gives the food a wholesome, appetising look and reinforces the fact that you are indeed feeding real chicken. This appeal to owners is a nice marketing angle and we would love to see more food like this from all cat food brands.

In addition to their chicken sourcing, the inclusion of bone broth is another standout feature. It’s an improvement over simply adding water as it offers both hydration and nutritional value. The product’s low calorie content is another positive, especially for indoor cats or cats who are watching their weight.

Ingredient improvements and nutritional notes

While several ingredients are thoughtfully selected, others could benefit from clearer labelling and sourcing. For example, “fish extract” is a bit vague – it could refer to fish oil extract or other fish products. Similar to some other products we have reviewed, we aren’t a fan of the mention of vitamins and minerals as a blanket statement.

In terms of binders, Trilogy uses both tapioca starch and guar gum, which are common in wet foods for texture and consistency. However, tapioca starch can also contribute to the overall carbohydrate content, which we would prefer if it were omitted. Overall, Trilogy’s wet food offers some promising qualities, but a little more ingredient transparency would elevate its appeal even further.

Lastly, alfalfa is mentioned as a core ingredient in Trilogy’s cat food (for digestion benefits), but is clearly absent in the ingredient list. It’s more likely an error on their website to declare that this product line has it, but it could also be an error in the ingredient list. The latter would be worse given how clear ingredient lists are intended to be. We’re happy to update our review if Trilogy were to reach out to clarify the issue.

In summary, at 63 kcal per 100g (or 54kcal per can), this food is a good option for those seeking a lower-calorie cat food – it’s also very low in fat. Lastly, keep in mind that it’s an adult food only and should not be fed to kittens.
